Gilani on Friday said the government will provide maximum relief to
common man in the next budget for fiscal year 2012-13.
“The Ministry of Finance has been directed to provide maximum
relief to common man in the forthcoming budget,” Prime Minister
Gilani said while talking to media persons here.
To a question about the restoration of NATO supply vis a vis
new terms of engagement with US/NATO/ISAF, the Prime Minister said,
the Parliament would decide the matter, which was currently being
discussed in the Parliamentary Committee on National Security.
About law and order situation in Karachi, Gilani said, the
federal government was concerned over the situation in Karachi and
was ready to fully cooperate with the provincial government and
provide all out assistance to tackle the situation.
To a question about the law and order situation in
Balochistan, the Prime Minister said Balochis were very patriotic
and have rendered numerous sacrifices for Pakistan, adding,
injustices were done with the people of Balochistan in the past and
the present government wanted to compensate them.
He, however, maintained that the protection of life and
property was the responsibility of the provincial government,
adding, the provincial government will take measures in the light of
Thursday’s decision of the Supreme Court.
About the summoning of Hussain Haqqani by the Memo Commission,
the Prime Minister said, though the matter was subjudice, but viewed
that Hussain Haqqani should also be extended the same facility
(video conference), as given to Mansoor Ijaz, who even was not a
Pakistani citizen.
Mansoor Ijaz also refused to appear before the Parliamentary
Committee, which is a contempt of the Parliament, he remarked.
To a question about the criticism of PML-N, the Prime Minister
said, the PML-N, which has its own manifesto and programme, besides
having its government in Punjab was also playing the role of an
Opposition at the federal level.
Criticizing each other and having difference of opinion on
various issues is part of politics and falls within the spirit of
democracy, he remarked.
About US bounty on Hafiz Saeed, the Prime Minister said
besides a policy statement issued by the Foreign Office he has also
expressed his view-point on the floor of the House during the Joint
Sitting of Parliament on Thursday and stated that it was Pakistan’s
internal matter.
Gilani, however, added that if anyone had any concrete
evidence, it should be provided to Pakistan, as the courts in
Pakistan are free and independent.
The Prime Minister further said that Pakistan has bilateral
relations with both India and the United States and the issue can
also be discussed at the bilateral level.

WASHINGTON, March 13 (PFP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta indicated that the U.S. soldier accused of killing 16 Afghans could face death penality if convicted.

Panetta told reporters aboard his plane en route to Kyrgyzstan, late on Monday, that the shooting suspect would be brought to justice under the U.S. military legal code, which allows for the death penalty in some cases.

Earlier in the day, a military defense attorney said the soldier, who has not been publicly identified, could face the death penalty in the massacre of 16 villagers near Kandahar.

“My understanding is that in these instances that could be a consideration,” Panetta told reporters.

He also gave a brief description of what happened, saying that the American soldier walked out of his base in Afghan southern province of Kandahar on Sunday morning, entered homes of nearby Afghan villagers and fired on civilians.

“Then at some point after that (he) came back to the forward operating base and basically turned himself in. Told individuals what happened,” Panetta said.

The incident is one of the worst cases of alleged mass murder by a U.S. service member since the Vietnam War.

U.S. officials have said the soldier acted alone, leaving his base in southern Afghanistan and opening fire on sleeping families. After the massacre, he went back to his base and turned himself in, officials said.

The military will not identify the soldier until charges are filed, Pentagon spokesman William Speaks said on Monday. The suspect remains in Afghanistan while the attack is being investigated.

Military officials have said the soldier will not be turned over to Afghan authorities for trial. Afghan lawmakers have called for the soldier to be tried in Afghan courts.

Not only was he the world’s most wanted terrorist but a man whose extremist ideology had and continues to wreak havoc globally. Afghanistan was attacked and occupied by the US-led NATO forces because of this one man’s dangerous ideology. For years, the search for the al Qaeda chief was a top priority for the world community. On May 2, 2011, that search ended when he was killed by US Navy SEALs in Pakistan’s garrison town, Abbottabad. It was the worst possible humiliation for Pakistan, a frontline ally of the US in the war on terror, when bin Laden was found near the country’s premier military academy. Questions had been raised about Pakistan’s duplicitous role in the war on terror for years but on May 2, these questions and accusations turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. The compound where OBL lived for years without being detected right under the nose of the Pakistani military became an embarrassing reminder of the military’s incompetence and/or alleged complicity. Now that compound has finally been demolished.

What could be the motivation for finally demolishing the house where Osama bin Laden lived for years and was finally taken out? It seems that some neighbours have complained that they were being constantly harassed or watched by the intelligence agencies. But will the demolition of a building help a neighbourhood that is already under suspicion? No valid justification has been given for this act. Maybe it was razed because the compound was a constant reminder of the failure of the armed forces and intelligence agencies. It virtually became a scar of embarrassment for the military and the spy agencies. By demolishing the compound, they might be trying to wipe out the ignominy but it is doubtful if people will ever forget what happened there on May 2. Or maybe the government has tried to use the same logic as the US did when they buried OBL at sea so that his grave could not be turned into a shrine for the extremists. If the government thinks that by demolishing this building, they can stop his followers from following his ideology, they might be in for a surprise. While the US commandos took away computers and other incriminating material from the OBL compound, Pakistani security and intelligence agencies were also crawling all over the place, and took away truckloads of material from OBL’s lair. Nothing is known so far what, if anything, all that material contained. Now that the Abbottabad Commission is done with its investigation, perhaps this was considered the ‘right’ moment to get rid of the building. Some questions, however, still remain unanswered. Did the owner(s) of the building agree to the demolition or was it done at the whim of the establishment? What will happen to the empty plot now? Would it not have been much better to use the compound as a public school or for some other social welfare purpose instead of razing it? May 2, 2011, was a blot on Pakistan. It cannot be erased for centuries. The whole exercise of getting rid of a building is without any sense as such. Clearly, those who took the decision to erase OBL’s compound do not really care for logic.(PFP)

Obama – seeking to reassure Americans over the danger posed by Tehran’s suspect nuclear program, and any negative side-effects for the United States – said Washington was working “in lockstep” with Israel to bring Iran to heel. “I don’t think Israel has made a decision” to strike Iranian facilities, Obama said in a pre-Super Bowl interview with NBC. When asked if Washington would be consulted first should Israel move ahead with those plans, he said he could not go into specifics but added that the two allies had “closer intelligence and military consultations” than ever before. “My number one priority continues to be the security of the United States. But also, the security of Israel is important. And we’re going to make sure that we work in lockstep, as we proceed to try to solve this – hopefully diplomatically.” Obama said the Islamic republic was “feeling the pinch” of ever tougher sanctions imposed by the international community, and dismissed concerns that Tehran could retaliate by striking US soil, saying such a strike was unlikely. “I’ve been very clear – we’re going to do everything we can to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and creating a nuclear arms race in a volatile region,” he said. “We have mobilised the international community, in a way that is unprecedented. They are feeling the pinch. They are feeling the pressure,” he said. Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for strictly peaceful purposes. On whether Tehran could possibly strike US targets, Obama said: “We don’t see any evidence they have those intentions or capabilities.” He added: “Again, our goal is to resolve this diplomatically. That would be preferable. We’re not going to take options off the table, though.” Last week, a Washington Post opinion column said US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta believes there is a “strong likelihood” that Israel will strike Iran’s nuclear installations this spring. When asked about the newspaper’s article by reporters traveling with him to a Nato meeting in Brussels, Panetta brushed it aside. “I’m not going to comment on that. Israel indicated they’re considering this (a strike), we’ve indicated our concerns,” he said.
